Piece of Cake Parties Easter Competition

We want YOU to make us an Easter Picture!  

It can be a drawing, painting or collage.  You can create an Easter cake, display or hat and photograph it. The possibilities are endless! We are looking for you to be as original and imaginative as you can as long as it reflects the Easter theme and what it means to you.

The Rules & How to Enter

1. Draw, Paint or Create an Easter picture.  It can be whatever makes Easter special to you.  You can draw or paint a picture (using a colouring in picture is fine), you can make an easter hat, easter cake, easter display and photograph it - as long as its something you create!

2.  Once you have created your masterpiece photograph or scan your creation.  Then email to us at pieceofcakeparties@iinet.net.au with your first name and age included and an address to send prizes.  All entries must be submitted strictly by the 12th April 2011.

3.  We will then load it to our blog and will announce a winner on the 13th April 2011 via the blog as judged by the Piece of Cake Parties family.

4.  This competition is open to both children, adults and families.  Its just a bit of fun to spread some happiness for the Easter holiday :)  When submitting as a family, make sure you include all names with your entry.  Entry is FREE.

Pinwheels & Balloons - starting to plan Declan's 2nd Birthday!

So Declan's 2nd birthday is coming up, well ok its in July but still it will be here before we know - so I have been eagerly planning away and getting myself in a tiz and changing my mind every five minutes, as there is just way to much inspiration and gorgeousness out there - its so hard to stay on track!

Decks is my baby and he is an absolute cracker!  He is the cutest, cheekiest child ever and has a wild sense of humour for a little tacker.  He is my little shadow and is under my feet 24/7.  Drives me bonkers at times but my, does he bring joy to my life!

So my personal number one party rule is making the theme personal to your child.

If Declan was old enough to tell me what theme he wanted he would say BALLS!!  The boy is beyond obsessed with balls, he is always playing ball games, rips pages out of books & magazines when he finds one and we have daily heated discussions over the fact that mummy cant pull the ball out of the television that Postman Pats son is playing with, or similar.

So whilst balls seemed the obvious theme choice and hubby was convinced that he could throw a 'sick' ball birthday party, Mummy wasnt convinced.  So we had to do a little compromising and we swapped balls for balloons, another Declan obsession and basically the same thing right, but prettier! :)  So thinking what else he loves, pinwheels!  Since buying some for last years party decorations they have been a regular in our household and you dont ever want to get in between Declan and his pinwheel :P

So 'Pinwheels & Balloons' is our theme for this years party.  Throw in some bubbles, kinder surprises and some ball games outside and our party is pure Declan!

I find this 'Kite Party' by Tracey Lau just divine! Super cute whilst still masculine and a gorgeous vintage feel that I love and am hoping to portray into Declan's party.  Be sure to check out Tracey's full blog post on her son's amazing party!

I had eagerly been awaiting the new Pinwheels printables that the lovely Vesna of My Little Jedi had been working on and was stoked when it was released not only in the colours I am using but also with balloons as well as the pinwheels. Perfect!

Christmas at Our Place

Happy New Year everyone!  I hope you all had a fabulous Christmas!

Ours was lovely and the boys had a ball.  Just a few happy snaps from our celebrations this year!

Christmas Desserts - always my favourite part!  Pavlova, Lemon Meringue, Trifle, Chocolate Kisses, Apple Pie & lots of other yummies. 

And a few of the boys cubby that my super clever hubby made for them for Christmas.

Bug Party ~ Real Party Feature!

Here are some snaps of my nephew Mayson's 6th Birthday party in October.  My sister did a fabulous job of the set up, my photos in no way do it justice!  It was such a bright, fun and happy set up filled with lots of gorgeous handmade decorations such as butterflies, ladybugs, spiders and bees.  Lovely tissue paper pom poms from Ah-Tissue, bunting by Zippy Zippy plus lots of gorgeous party supplies from Piece of Cake Parties of course :)

I LOVE really bright, fun parties and this was no exception the kids had a ball! Thanks for letting me share your gorgeous party Mel :)

Happy Birthday To Me

I Love Birthdays. Well, all birthdays except my own that is.

The thrill of my birthday wore off once I became a ‘grown up’ and I don’t usually do much, but since my family were all going to come up to see me anyway I figured on Thursday, why not put on a pretty afternoon tea , just for fun! Plus I really wanted to test out some of the cute girly products I have in stock, all the pink ones of course! In a home with three boys there isn’t much room for pink so it was lovely to set up a really girly table.

For my table I pulled things from around my house to decorate the table plus pink plates, gorgeous polka dot napkins and pink stripe straws in bottles of red creaming soda. So much more fun drinking out of a funky straw :)

Also used gorgeous ‘Pink Spot’ cupcake wrappers that I have recently added to our range from The Cupcake Wrapper Co. Now these look gorgeous in the pack but to actually use them on the cakes, they are just awesome! I love them, they really did make all the difference and along with some gorgeous handmade cupcake toppers, made simply decorated cupcakes look divine.   A big thanks also to my lovely sister for making me a super cute pink birthday cake!

As I was sharing my birthday with Father’s Day this year, we had the afternoon tea on Saturday so everyone could just relax and enjoy the afternoon. It really was lovely to do something nice for my birthday and amazing how something as simple as a pretty table can really make it feel that extra bit special. That and beautiful family of course :)

How We Made our Rainbow Birthday Cake

We recently had our boys Ethan & Declan’s birthday party (see our post below) and decided to make a rainbow cake for one of them. Since showing you our pics we have had many requests on how we did it, so here I share with you our super secret recipe!

Not really for me the more time I spend out of the kitchen the better, im not a fan of cooking! We actually just used a packet cake mix. Now before I go on just a reminder I/ we are in no way cake makers/decorators and we dont sell cakes, we are simply a Mum and a Dad who were making their boys a birthday cake and this is how we did it

We were making a large base cake, our tin was 30cm so we used 4 vanilla cake mixes.

- Mix up your cake mix or make up your mix if using a recipe according to the instructions.

- Decide how many colours you would like to use. We used 6 in ours. Split the mix into even amounts in separate bowls. Add a colour to each bowl of mix and mix it in. We used both Wilton cake decorating colours and also just your regular food colouring that you buy at the supermarket and both worked perfectly.

- Grease your tin, its always good to remember that! Then choose one colour and pour the mix into the centre of your pan. Repeat this process with your other colours. Pour each colour into the centre of your pan, on top of the other colours. The mix will spread to the edge of your pan as you add more colours.

- Bake your cake.

- Then when its baked and cooled you should have a bright array of colours when you cut your cake

We were concerned the first time we made it as the top went quite brown so we didnt think it would work out but this didnt have any effect on the inside once we cut it, it looked excellent. It was all covered with icing anyway so didnt really matter.

As our cake was so big we did all 6 colours in one hit, however if you are using a smaller cake pan it may be better to split your mix in half, add one half of your colours and bake and then do the same with the other half and once both are baked, put them on top of one another. Just another way we have seen it done when making a smaller cake.

So there you have it, super easy but it really does make an impact especially to little ones! Good luck with yours!
